How to Read Your IRS Transcript

Your IRS transcript holds the key to understanding your tax situation. Most importantly, it contains your CSED (Collection Statute Expiration Date) — the date when your tax liability becomes legally uncollectible.

Your Freedom Date: The CSED
The most important date on your transcript

The IRS has 10 yearsfrom the date of assessment to collect a tax liability. After this date — your CSED (also called your "Freedom Date") — the liability becomes legally uncollectible and must be written off.

Example CSED Calculation:

  • Tax Year 2016 return filed: April 15, 2017
  • Assessment date (Code 150): May 1, 2017
  • CSED (Freedom Date): May 1, 2027

Warning:Certain actions can "toll" (pause) the CSED clock, including filing an Offer in Compromise, bankruptcy, or living outside the US for 6+ months.
